BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College's baseball program now has its own streak.
After qualifying for the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) State Baseball Playoffs for the fifth time in six years, the Tiger baseball team can claim an even stronger streak.
Sophomore Justin Neal of Southaven was recently named the Baseball Player of the Week for games played April 22-28.
Neal's selection, his second of the year, also extends the Tigers streak to four straight for a Northeast player to be honored by the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC).
Falkner's Will Robertson got the streak going during the week of April 1-7 when the Tippah County native went 9-for-14 with two doubles, two home runs, nine runs batted in and scored four runs while garnering five walks in four games.
Neal collected his first Player of the Week honor for games played April 8-14 when the Southaven native went 9-for-18 with four home runs, 14 RBI, eight runs scored.
Former Mississippi State University transfer Tanner Gaines of Baldwyn kept the streak alive when the Tiger right-hander was selected as the MACJC Pitcher of the Week for games played April 15-21.
Gaines tossed a complete game three-hitter to seal the Tigers' berth in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) State Baseball Playoffs as Northeast knocked off Itawamba 7-0 in Fulton on Saturday, April 20.
Neal made it four Tigers in a row as the DeSoto County product continued an offensive barrage against the opposition pitchers.
In a split with Copiah-Lincoln Community College and Baton Rouge (La.) Community College on April 23 in Wesson, Neal went 5-for-6 with three runs scored, two home runs and five RBI.
Neal was also walked in the Baton Rouge game after hitting a two-run home run that kickstarted a five-run third inning for the Tigers.
Neal collected his second home run of the day against the Wolves as the Northeast sophomore jumpstarted the Tiger offense with a three-run blast. However, Neal's single in the seventh helped set the stage for an 11-10 win over Copiah-Lincoln.
On Friday, April 26, Neal made sure he had a Sophomore Day that would not be soon forgotten as the Southaven native knocked around three hits against the Trojans in the opening game of the North Division doubleheader that helped the Tigers secure at least a tie for the North Division championship.
In the nightcap, Neal helped the Tigers overcome a 51-minute rain delay to secure the North Division championship outright.
