BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College men's basketball program has added one of the top shooting guards in the Magnolia State to its 2013-14 recruiting class.
Petal's Cannon Edwards agreed to join Cord Wright's first squad at the Booneville-based college.
Edwards was part of 50 wins at Petal High School while stepping on the court as a Panther ever since his freshman year.
During his final Panther campaign, Edwards averaged 13.5 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per outing while scoring 378 points his senior year.
Edwards was also named to the All-Area second team in 2012-13 after averaging just under a steal and assist per game for the Panthers.
Edwards, a 6-3 guard, come into his own as a shooting guard and perfected his shot with 75 three-pointers his senior season.
While hitting a three-pointer in 26 of 28 games this year, Edwards also was a threat inside the arc for Petal High School.
During a February 2 game against Picayune, Edwards scored 28 points while knocking down seven three pointers. Edwards also had a 25-point outing against South Jones on November 8, 2012 where he hit 9-of-13 shots from the floor.
Edwards scored double digits in 25 of 28 contests for the Panthers and did not drop less than eight points in a game during his senior season.
Edwards hit 45 percent of his shots from the floor during the 2012-13 season for the Panthers including 41-percent from beyond the arc. Edwards was also a threat at the free throw line connecting on 79 percent of his free throw attempts.
In addition to his scoring prowess, Edwards was a key rebounder for the Panthers and recorded three double-doubles on the year.
During the November 8, 2012 game against South Jones, Edwards scored 25 points and pulled down 13 rebounds and turned in an 11-rebound performance twice in wins against Perry Central on November 3, 2012 and Seminary on December 8, 2012.
Edwards averaged less than two turnovers a game for the Panthers during his final year at Petal.
During his junior season, Edwards averaged 11.8 points per game with 3.8 rebounds per outing while scoring 318 points for the Panthers.
As a freshman and sophomore, Edwards averaged 2.7 and 10.9 points per game and made his self known on the rebounding end with a 4.2 rebounds per game average his sophomore year.
With the addition of Edwards, Wright has added three new faces to the Tiger 2013-14 roster including H.W. Byers' Chris Echols and Brusly High School (Addis, La.) guard Dimario Jackson.
