BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College's baseball team did not pause during Spring Break.
Northeast (9-7, 3-1) made the most of its week away from academic classes as the Tigers finished the week 5-1 including sweeps of East Central Community College and East Mississippi Community College.
Northeast got the ball rolling with a sweep of East Central on Saturday, March 9 as the Tigers knocked off the Warriors 18-8 in eight innings and then turned in a 10-0 effort in a six-inning affair.
In the opener against the Warriors, Northeast scored 11 runs in the second inning keyed by Alcorn Central's Jake Beck.
Beck tallied a double and a home run in the 11-run second while piecing together a 2-for-3 day with two RBI and a run scored.
Northeast almost matched its run total with 17 hits in the contest with Kossuth's Heath Wood pacing the Tigers with four hits and Chris Aichinger and Will Robertson tallying three hits apiece.
After dropping its North Division opener to Holmes 6-1 on Tuesday, March 12, Northeast rallied to take the next three North Division contests.
Northeast knocked off Holmes by an identical 6-1 decision in the nightcap and then pulled out a 3-2 win against East Mississippi before dropping a 12-2 decision on the Lions to cap the week.
In the 6-1 win over Holmes, Tanner Gaines, Kyle Robbins and Jonathan Morison combined to limit the Bulldogs to just three hits while the Tigers bashed out seven hits with Josh Mills leading the way with two.
Team captain Ethan Estes came through for the Tigers in the 3-2 win over the Lions in eight innings on Saturday, March 16 as the sophomore from Biggersville was 3-for-3 with a walk in the contest.
Estes' biggest base knock came when the Northeast sophomore ripped a single up the middle of the infield that allowed Robertson to come home with the winning run.
While Estes was collecting three of the Tigers five hits in the game, Robbins and Morrison were busy silencing the East Mississippi offense.
Robbins went a regulation seven innings while allowing just two runs and struck out seven in the affair but Morrison picked up the win by tossing a perfect eighth inning.
After going extra innings in the opener, Northeast wasted little time in knocking off the Lions in the nightcap.
East Mississippi captured a 2-1 lead through the top of the third but Northeast added 11 runs over its next three at bats in sealing the victory
Northeast pounded out eight hits against East Mississippi in the nightcap with Mills leading the way again with two hits – a single and a triple.
Justin Neal had a double in the nightcap for the Tigers as the sophomore's double provided the game-ending run in the bottom of the fifth.
David Gibson, who picked up a win against East Central a week prior, collected his second win of the break with a four-inning effort that saw the Kossuth freshman allow just two earned runs to the Lions.
Northeast, which has won six of its last seven games, will look to continue its momentum as the Tigers travel to Memphis, Tenn., to take on Southwest Tennessee on Tuesday, March 19. First pitch at Christian Brothers High School is set for 1:30 p.m.
