Decatur, Miss. – The Northeast Mississippi Community College baseball team did not receive the results it had hoped for in its return to the diamond after nearly a week off.
The Tigers lost by scores of 5-1 to Wabash Valley (Ill.) College and 3-2 versus host East Central Community College on Saturday at the Clark/Gay Baseball Complex.
Northeast got on the scoreboard in the top of the first against Wabash Valley following a two-plus hour delay in the start time due to extra innings in the opening contest of the day.
Trent Turner plated Colby Williams, who took a walk to begin the matchup, on a sacrifice fly to give the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage.
But the Warriors, who are ranked No. 20 in all divisions and associations of junior college baseball by Perfect Game, stormed back to score each of their five runs in the third and fourth frames to put the game away.
Cody Bo Dillard and Ben Hellums combined to give up just two earned runs over a period of five innings on the mound. Dillard (0-2) got the start and allowed six hits over 3.1 frames.
Townsend Myers faced the minimum in the sixth and struck out one for his third solid relief appearance of the season.
Northeast never found a rhythm offensively versus Zach Lewis (3-0). Lewis went the distance and gave up two hits, both off the bat of Turner, with eleven strikeouts and three walks.
Ray Perez led Wabash Valley (8-5) with two hits and 3 RBI's while Manuel DeJesus and Claudio Rubiera both had doubles.
Tyler Cox was brilliant in the nightcap for the Tigers. The University of Kentucky transfer hurled five shutout innings with just two hits allowed and five strikeouts.
Cox exited with a lead after Northeast pushed across two runs in the top of the fourth. Turner hustled to reach second base on a throwing error, advanced to third on a dropped strike three and then took home on a passed ball.
Scott Pala followed Turner's hustle play with a RBI single that scored Dillard to put the Tigers (3-7) up 2-0.
However, East Central (6-8) would take the lead in the bottom of the sixth on RBI hits by Cody Daigle and John Berry.
Jordan Montgomery reached on an error to start the seventh, but Zach Mowdy recorded three straight outs from that point to earn the save for the Warriors.
Tyler Nelms (0-1) faced six batters in the sixth inning for Northeast and took the loss.
The Tigers continue their lengthy road swing on Tuesday, March 4 with a trip to Calhoun (Ala.) Community College. First pitch of game one in Decatur, Ala., is set for noon.
