Booneville, Miss. - The Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) is mourning the loss of a friend and colleague.
Pearl River Community College sports information director Mitch Deaver died at his home on Tuesday evening. He was 62 years old.
"Mitch was one of the true sports fans and provided a tremendous service not only to Pearl River, but to the entire MACJC," said MACJC commissioner Jim Southward. "Mitch will be truly missed by all. Our sympathies go out to all family and friends."
Deaver spent nearly one third of his life as either a student or employee at Pearl River. He documented the Wildcats' athletic programs for 19 years through his brilliant photography and outstanding writing ability.
He frequently passed his excellent photos along the opposing schools that Pearl River played and also compiled the master football schedule for the conference. His artwork appeared on numerous athletic websites and newspaper publications across the Magnolia State.
Deaver will always be remembered by his many comrades for his friendly smile, his passion towards his Wildcats and their many successes and the trademark photographer's vest that he always wore during athletic events.
"Mitch was a blessing to so many people, including myself," Northeast sports information director Blake Long said. "He was always hospitable and so outgoing each and every time that our paths crossed. I know I share these sentiments with many others across the state.
"Pearl River will not be the same without Mitch and his amazing skills. Our prayers at Northeast are with his family and loved ones during this difficult loss."
He is survived by a brother, three sisters, a number of nieces and nephews and countless others who were honored to know him during his incredible life.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. on Friday at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday with burial at Slade Cemetary in his hometown of Purvis.
Sports information departments around the MACJC have posted their own tributes in recognition of the contributions that Deaver made to us all.
