Booneville, Miss. - Becky Robinson rose to the occasion when the Northeast Mississippi Community College coaching staff called her name on Wednesday.
Robinson had a crucial RBI single that finally got the Tigers into motion in their 8-0, run-rule shortened victory over visiting Mississippi Delta Community College at David Carnell Memorial Field.
Northeast also took a shortened 9-0 win in the opener for its fifth sweep of the season and fourth against Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division competition.
The Tigers started the nightcap of the doubleheader at a slow pace and held only a 2-0 lead after three innings following a sacrifice fly by Bianca Chagolla and a fielding error that plated Chelsea Buntin.
But Robinson, a Walnut native, stepped to the plate after a dropped flyball in the fourth and laced a single to left field that scored courtesy runner Mirah Terry.
Trenisha King, Avery Springer, Yasmeen Cooper and Chagolla then strung together four straight RBI hits to cap a five-run frame that extended Northeast's advantage to 7-0.
Robinson also added a stolen base in her third start of the campaign. She was a combined 2 for 4 on the afternoon with two RBIs and one run scored.
"I was feeling excitement," said Robinson. "I'm really happy that I've finally gotten out of my hitting slump. It was a big relief."
Bre Agnew came off the bench in the sixth and crushed a walk-off pinch-hit double over the head of Sheana Witt in left field that brought Cooper home and halted the contest early.
Chagolla (6-8) held the Trojans to just two hits in the entire matchup and obtained the win in the circle for the Tigers. She struck out six and walked three in her sixth complete game of the season.
King was just as dominant in the first contest of the day, even after a three-week layoff between appearances. The freshman from Tuscumbia, Ala., tossed the initial shutout of her collegiate career against Mississippi Delta.
"I was kind of nervous going into today, but I just got out there and played my game and did what I was supposed to do," said King. "I feel like I did something for my team and I stepped up and got a big win today."
The Trojans (2-22, 2-12) threatened to score off King in the top of the first after back-to-back singles by Janesha Nickerson and Tayler Seiler.
Mississippi Delta could not push a run across, however, after a failed double steal. Courtesy runner Kim Curtis raced to second base, but Shannon Goode cut off catcher Lacy Blakney's throw and gunned Emily Cox at the plate for the third out of the frame.
King (2-2) settled in and retired 15 out of the next 17 batters, including nine straight to conclude the matchup. The right-hander walked only one and struck out four.
"Both Bianca and Trenisha did a good job," said Tigers headman Jody Long. "They competed and gave us a chance and that's all I asked of them. They each continue to get better."
Buntin manufactured a run to help Northeast (15-21, 10-6) take an early 1-0 lead. The Glen product singled, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on King's opposite field hit.
She followed that in the second inning with a RBI triple that got past the centerfielder and plated Terry. King and Chagolla extended the Tigers' advantage to 4-0 later in the Tigers' at bat after two singles in a row.
King capped a 3 for 4 performance at the dish in the fourth with a double into the left field gap that allowed Buntin to touch home plate.
Northeast added three more in the sixth to end the game prematurely due to the eight-run rule. Robinson began the inning with a pinch-hit RBI single that made the score 7-0 in favor of the Tigers.
Springer then delivered the winner with a hit to the left field that plated Whittney Gee and Chagolla to give Northeast its margin of victory.
The Tigers racked up 15 hits in both matchups of the twinbill versus the Trojans. Buntin and King paced the Tigers with five apiece while Chagolla and Gee each tallied four base knocks.
"The defense played behind our pitchers and the offense scored runs," Long said. "Now we finally get to take a couple of days off."
Northeast does not return to the diamond until Thursday, April 10 at East Mississippi Community College. The Tigers and Lions, who are currently tied for third place in the MACJC North Division, are scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch in Scooba.
