TIGER, LADY TIGER TENNIS TEAMS SCORE FIRST SWEEP OF YEAR,HEAD TO STATE TOURNAMENT ON APRIL 18-20

BOONEVILLE, Miss. –  Northeast Mississippi Community College men and women's tennis teams picked the right time for their first sweep of the year.

Ben Shappley's Tiger and Lady Tiger tennis teams capped their regular season with a sweep of Northwest Mississippi 7-2, 5-4 respectively in Senatobia on Tuesday, April 16.

Northeast's men program scored its first victory of the season with the 7-2 decision while the Lady Tigers tallied their fourth win of the season with the 5-4 result.

On the men's side, Northeast swept through doubles action and only dropped the second- and fifth-ranked singles action in recording their initial victory of the season.

Matt Lorick, Wesley Brandon, Hunter Seeley and Ande Mills all came away with multiple wins against the Rangers in Senatobia.

Lorick quickly dispatched Chase Ferrell in the top-rated singles match and teamed with Andrew Ferrell for a win in the top-ranked doubles match. Lorick knocked off C. Ferrell 6-1, 6-2 in singles before teaming with A. Ferrell for an 8-6 win over Weldon Meng and C. Ferrell.

In the third-ranked singles match, Brandon made quick work of Michael Moss with a 6-0, 6-1 showing then tagteamed the second-ranked doubles match with Seeley for an 8-1 showing against Seth Cook and Moss.

Seeley turned the trick in his fourth-ranked singles match against Cook 6-2, 6-1.

Mills helped the Tigers seal up the win with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Ike Dulin in the sixth-ranked singles match. Mills scored his second victory of the day as the Alcorn Central graduate teamed with former high school teammate Drew Gann to knock off Dulin and Miles Moore 8-2 in the third-ranked doubles match.

Ferrell and Gann would not give up their singles matches without a fight. Ferrell and Gann, both former Alcorn Central standouts, carried Meng and Moore to identical 6-3, 7-6 games before falling. Ferrell dropped his 7-6 set (7-5) while Gann stretched his match out longer with an 8-6 showing in the 7 -6 set.

On the women's side, Northeast edged out a one-point victory over Northwest to record its fourth win of the year.

Earlier in the year, Northeast swept the season-series against Holmes and captured a 5-4 decision against Hinds Community College on March 4.

Northeast knocked off Holmes 7-2 in Goodman on March 19 before taking a 6-3 decision against the Lady Bulldogs on April 5 at home.

In the close match against the Lady Rangers, Northeast captured the top-, third- and sixth-ranked singles matches before taking a majority of the doubles matches.

Valerie Mitchell and Emily Wiltshire edged out an 8-6 victory over Kathryn Hutto in the second-ranked doubles match while Allison Wiltshire teamed with Elizabeth Mitchell for an 8-1 showing in the third-ranked doubles match against Kasey Pulliam and Haleigh Ash.

Northwest took the top-ranked doubles match 8-6 as Hannah Switzer and Sawyer Ewing squeaked out an 8-6 decision against Madison Rust and Maegan Trexler.

In the singles events, Northwest mounted a comeback in the standings before Northeast could quell the threat.

Rust dispatched Ashley Roberson 6-4, 6-0 in the top-ranked singles match while A. Wiltshire eased by Ewing 6-2, 6-3 in the third-ranked singles match.

Shappley used the fresh legs of Houston's Nikki Baird to pick up the Lady Tigers' third singles win when Baird was able to knock off Hutto 6-2, 6-4 in the sixth-ranked singles match.

Northwest would not go away without a fight and made a charge with Switzer taking a 6-3, 6-2 decision against

Trexler in the second-ranked singles match and the Lady Rangers captured the fourth- and fifth-ranked singles matches to close the gap.

Adriana Ferretiz knocked off Mitchell 6-3, 6-4 while Hannah Waldrip posted identical 6-3, 6-3 results against V. Mitchell.

After its first sweep of the year, Northeast's Tiger and Lady Tiger tennis teams will head to Tupelo to play in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) State Tennis Tournament hosted by Itawamba Community College on April 18-20.
